If you are doing a renovation to stay in place then you can splurge more knowing that you may not get money back from a particular thing you decide to do but you will get personal enjoyment. Overbuilding is one of the biggest mistakes people can make because once you get into a renovation project it becomes extremely easy to keep fixing things as you go along. Those fixes can add up to a lot of extra money that you may not get back when it is time to sell.
